About The Event

Join us for our first event back in The Poetry Center since the start of the covid-19 pandemic. We'll be hearing new work from, and engaging in conversation with, fellow Bay Area poets and SF State alums Keith Donnell Jr. and Antony Fangary. Originally from Philly, Keith Donnell Jr. is a Bay Area poet and book editor. His first poetry collection, The Move, is new this Fall 2021 from Nomadic Press. Antony Fangary is a Coptic-American poet, educator, and artist living in San Francisco. His chapbook, HARAM, was published by Etched Press in 2019.

Alum Keith Donnell Jr.'s New Poem Is a Eulogy for Malcolm X

JOURNAL OF THE PLAGUE YEAR -- Donnell, a graduate of San Francisco State University’s Creative Writing program, said that he’s immersed himself in history, both as an undergraduate and in an earlier master’s degree in African American literature. His approach to the Malcolm X poem, along with a collection that will be his second collection, represents his sense that to truly eliminate anti-Blackness requires nothing less than remaking society.

“I want to create a voice that is singular and at the same time, multitudes that talk over each other, connections between now and then,” he said.
